Department of Applied English

The Focus and Feature of Development

The Department helps students attain English proficiency, succeed in their academic studies, and obtain professional licenses. Students are expected to pass the first grade of GEPT mid- advance level before graduation. With the Department’s medium and long-term development plan, relevant courses based on industrial demands are conducted to increase students’ employability and competitiveness.

In addition to English courses of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, the curriculum meets the needs of the job market with three professional modules: (a) the language teaching module (b) the economic and trade module (c) the tourist navigation module, hoping to provide multiple choices to students. To conform to the language needs of the international trade market, the department requires students of 4-year College to choose a second foreign language (Japanese, Spanish or French) for 8 credits before graduation, and 4 credits for 2-year college students.

Teaching Environment and Curriculum

In the high-quality learning environment, students are divided into small groups for classes. All conversation classes are taught by foreign teachers. There are often diverse extracurricular lectures, international exchanges and apprenticeships organized.

The teaching objective of the Department is to educate students with English abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation, and trade expertise as well as business skills to work as English secretaries or business assistants, or as bilingual professionals working in the leisure and tourism industry in the future.

There are 9 classrooms for language teaching, self-counseling and simulated learning, and 4 computer classrooms shared with other departments. There are also a conference classroom, an English writing classroom, a group classroom, and classrooms for digital teaching, tutorial producing, seminar and discussion, and a computer classroom.
